Recently the song "Excuse Me" from my catalog has been gaining a lot of attention on Spotify. Looking at the metrics, "Excuse Me" is gaining favor in places such as Australia, Spain, Brazil, and Canada. I can only guess the increase in plays this song has gotten is from its placement on recent playlists. According to CD Baby, Spotify's algorithm looks at unique user plays, shares, and playlisting positions.
A unique user play means that if I listen to the same song 100 times in a row isn't necessarily considered a unique play. Instead, I would need to listen to a song. Then listen to another song, go back to the original, and listen to that song. All to have Spotify consider it two unique plays. When sharing music, Spotify rewards those shares by giving the song more weight in consideration for placement in Spotify playlists. It is because the links shared are on outside platforms. Those links have the potential to bring new customers to their platform.
New customers are valuable to sites like these, and they reward those accordingly. Finally, when a song is placed on a playlist this kind of goes back to the unique user play.
When a popular playlist adds a new song. Music on playlists can generate lots of new plays and listeners. The more listeners a song gets as well as saves. The song will gain attention from the algorithm and is more likely to be placed or shuffled into Spotify playlists for users to hear. These playlists can look like Daily Mix, Top mix, and genre-specific generated playlists. I'm not sure why "Excuse Me" is gaining attention. To be fair, this piece doesn't have a backstory. When I was writing my last album my friends called it a "filler song". My guess as to why it is getting attention now could be related to the piano solo, pop vocals, or relatable lyrics.
